On February 24, 2022, Russia started what western media has described as an “unprovoked” full-scale military invasion into its neighbor Ukraine. For the vast majority, this news came out of the blue and the response of the “free” world was swift and strong.
Ours after the invasion began, US President Joe Biden condemned this “premeditated attack.” Over the following weeks the US and its allies applied “nuclear” options and closed its airspace, excluded Russia from the SWIFT banking system,
froze Russian assets, and left the Russian Federation the
most sanctioned state in history….
What Is Democracy?
Containing the Organized Few
This article does not aim to resolve the definition of democracy per se, but rather to show why its contemporary use as a moral yardstick is structurally questionable.
At its most basic and objective level, Democracy—derived from the Greek demos (people) and kratos (rule)—describes a system in which political power is vested in the people as a whole and exercised either directly or through freely elected representatives.
Taken at face value, this definition could apply to both the Russian and Western political systems; in theory, both operate as representative democracies where citizens periodically elect individuals to govern on their behalf within parliamentary or presidential frameworks. Peeling away all but the core of the matter, Democracy is simply the rule of the many.
Democracy, at its philosophical core, can be understood as a method designed to protect the Unorganized Many from domination of the Organized Few. Monarchies, aristocracies, oligarchies, and technocracies all represent systems optimized for organized minorities…
Upptaka evru mun leiða til stöðugleika.
Þetta er of einföld og villandi fullyrðing. Vissulega munu íslensk stjórnvöld ekki lengur geta fellt gengi eigin gjaldmiðils ef Ísland tekur upp evru, og smæð krónunnar er ákveðinn veikleiki fyrir íslenskt hagkerfi. En þetta er aðeins hluti málsins. Stöðugleiki gjaldmiðils er ekki það sama og stöðugleiki hagkerfisins. Í sumum aðstæðum getur sameiginleg peningastefna aukið óstöðugleika í einstöku aðildarríki, einmitt vegna þess að hún tekur ekki mið af sérstöðu þess hagkerfis. Írland er mikilvægt dæmi í þessu samhengi. Á áratugnum fyrir fjármálakreppuna 2008 voru vextir á evrusvæðinu ekki endilega í samræmi við efnahagsaðstæður á Írlandi

Mér þykir með ólíkindum hversu dapurlega léleg fréttastofa RÚV er orðin. Hún hefur reyndar ekki notið mikils álits hjá mér um langt skeið, en lengi getur vont versnað.
Að halda því fram að þar sé stunduð fréttamennska er í rauninni rangnefni. Vissulega segja menn þar fréttir af óveðri á Íslandi, kjaramálum og innanlandspólitík,
en þegar kemur að því sem er að gerast í umheiminum er lítið um sjálfstæða fréttamennsku og meira um slakar þýðingar á fréttaskeytum erlendra
fréttaveita á borð við Reuters og CNN.
